winter goodness

28 July 2013

highlands winter road trip with my mum 2004 (film)

The smell of wood fires nearby. A future wedding that we’re all excited about. Farmers who greet me warmly each week. A new weekly walking (& talking!) date with a precious friend. Family time in my mum & stepdad’s backyard. Rest time, always my scheduled rest times. My husband – my team mate in life. My dog snuggling under winter blankets & reaching out to touch me when I come near. Bumping into friends when walking or visiting new cafes. Real, throw-your-arms-around-each-other-and-squeeze hugs. A massive write-it-down-in-my-diary compliment from one of my favourite photographers. Zero makeup with a ponytail & a friend saying how clear & healthy my skin looked. Sneaking my hands into my husband’s pockets on a cold morning. Discovering I can wear merino wool singlets without irritation. Oven baked pudding. My husband’s chorizo risotto creation. Sharing clothes with my mum. Fun, inspiring workshops & making new friends. Getting out of my comfort zone. Letting stuff go from my mind. The golden winter light and long shadows. Overflowing love & gratitude for people, places & experiences.

What is your recent winter/summer goodness, my friends?

Oh what a lovely list! My (summer) list would include the smell of night scented stock, home made sugar free ice cream, playing in the garden with a certain delightful three year old, reading out of doors and eating three meals a day out of doors, picking salads from the garden, sleeping with the window open, a happy wedding….

Great descriptions on how you are enjoying your winter. The goodness of sun for me is sunshine, warmth, being outside without a coat, picking flowers and fresh fruit and vegetables in the garden. Watching the sun and moon rise and set, watching the birds, bees, bats and butterflies.

Sipping steaming chai lattes. A university open day with the promise of a return to study next year. Bubble baths and read wine. Nestling under my quilt and losing hours in a good book. Fragrant butter chicken in the slow cooker. Animated dinner party illuminated only by candlelight. Crisp walks in sunshine. Documentaries that move me. Wearing my man’s flat cap to the markets to hide my messy hair. Constant daydreams of travel to Europe and India. So much laughter shared with my partner. Hot pink asters to brighten my kitchen. Gratitude for this wonderful life. Thanks for sharing, and for letting me share. Your blog rocks :)

    Loved your Winter goodness list!
Coffee dates and cuddling with my two cats while reading a good book are high on my list but highest of all is our wedding anniversary. Each year that day dawns bright and crisp just like it did all those years ago.

Love this. I am a bit jealous of being able to wear wool on your skin. Wool and I are not friends. Hot chai tea in bookshop cafes; a beeswax candle making workshop and now I have beautiful candles to burn each night; crisp, bright days walking bare foot on the beach and stewed fruits and yoghurt.

    P.s love the film photo.

Oh I love your list! My summer is all about the smell of sunscreen, coolish sea water, salty hair after a long swim, long walks, ice cream and sundresses. Muah, darling.

Such rich and beautiful experiences. My summer has been wonderful, but this morning is again gray, and leaving me in a gloomy mood. My breakfast of summer berries and homemade granola was delicious. There’s a nice thought. But it is still gray. Maybe I need to go out for a walk and embrace the gray.

Driving the pacific coast highway, with the Pacific Ocean and the crashing waves to our right and a windy but fun road ahead. Having red wine in Napa while feasting on delicious meals. :)
