The thing I struggle with in this cookbook challenge is the number of desserts I have to make!! I grew up in a household where dessert was a treat – I never felt deprived, I loved my childhood food. However I do remember when a friend carried the tin of Milo from her house and we tucked into it as she lamented our boring pantry! As an adult my own trends in the kitchen have followed this line. I don’t make a habit of keeping sweets in stock and bake only a handful of times a year (remember the imperfect but delicious macarons I made?).

Consequently there is much I don’t know about making desserts. For Donna Hay’s Deconstructed Tiramisu, I learnt that she means brewed coffee into the saucepan with sugar, not coffee granules – I got the giggles over that mistake! I also discovered that one should allow mascarpone to warm to room temperature before whipping with the cream. After those little mishaps I tried again and thankfully still had a dessert to serve my mum, stepdad and in-laws who came for dinner. Mmmm yum was the all-round consensus. Phew!

I’m the opposite – I love sweets! Although I grew up in a similar house to you – we rarely had dessert. Maybe that’s why it still feels so special, all these years later? I unfortunately have nothing to share for cooking club this month, but I enjoyed reading your adventures :)

I made a dessert post today, too. Great minds think alike!

Your dessert looks wonderful! I like desserts too much, rarely have one at home, but I indulge when I am out – I had champagne and mango sorbet at The Dome in Edinburgh – heavenly!

Deconstructed Tiramisu sounds quirky. We all learn perfect dishes from our little “adjustments” :)

Dessert in my childhood home was the norm and I have carried that through into my home too! Your dessert looks wonderful! I have been carrying on trying out recipes from my choosen cookery book -I just haven’t got around to taking any pictures! I will do an up date post about it next month.

I’m the same as you – I grew up in a household where dessert wasn’t served very often. My cousins had ‘sweets’ after dinner every night (which I thought was hilarious because their last name is Sweet!). And I’m still the same now – we rarely have desserts, and that has lessened even more now that I can’t eat dairy!

Your Tiramisu looks so good. I am a total sucker for it but in general I am not a big fan of desserts. I would have the same problem as you with all the desserts in the book too!
