random facts about me

23 March 2013
me in new york 2010 (photo by my husband)

  • I had no great desire to travel the world until I found out I was going blind at age 19. My uncle fashioned a certificate for being “a courageous kid” and bought me my first international holiday to Indonesia. Nowadays I love the way my husband and I travel – walking for hours, eating good food, taking photos, visiting museums and galleries and getting a little peak into daily life.
  • Growing up, I travelled Australia a lot and had great adventures with my mum. We spent many school holidays cruising the islands of tropical North Queensland with my grandmother who lived on a yacht. We also camped, hiked, rode horses, competed in triathlons and skied and I am forever grateful for all the fun my mum gave me.
  • I don’t drink alcohol. After a few months of nightclubbing at age 18/19 the whole scene lost its appeal very quickly. I’ve never acquired the taste for wine due to the resulting blocked sinuses and sneezes. I also don’t like the way alcohol makes my senses fade away more. I enjoy a baileys and milk maybe once a year and the occasional sip of my husband’s favourite craft beers. Friends don’t even mention it, it’s a non-issue – I have plenty of fun without it!

Want to share 3 random facts about you? I’d love to hear them.

I love it when you share glimpses of yourself! I feel more “friends” that way. :)

    Three random facts about me.
    1. I’m the most like my paternal grandmother in personality, even to painting murals on walls in our houses.
    2. I’ve never met a celebrity. Actually, I don’t really want to. I’m not a fan girl type, and I think it’s sad that celebrities aren’t allowed to live uninterrupted lives.
    3. Someday, I’d like to through-hike the Appalachian Trail.

Yes, I agree with Erin about these glimpses of you.
    Here are my random three.
*From a young age I had a desire to travel the world and after leaving Australia in my early twenties lived in England (from where I travelled often to Europe) and U.S.A for 4 years.
*I love learning and speaking languages – so far it’s French, German, Italian and Welsh with an attempt at Danish :)
    *I’m a retired teacher.

This post reminds me a little bit of the 5 things posts going around. They’re always fun to read! I also am with you on the booze thing lately (although that comes and goes haha). Lately I’d just rather not drink, and feel great the next morning. But I do still have a glass of wine here and there with a good dish of pasta… haha

    These are such great factoids!
    1. I’m an introvert. Nobody believes this until they get to know me, because I’m friendly. But inside, I find interaction with new people, or groups of people incredibly draining and daunting. I like one-on-one interaction, and admittedly have been know to have secret panic attacks at parties in the past.
    2. I used to not drink alcohol. I started early. Really early. 13. But late in high school, I realized that people on drank to be drunk, because when you’re drunk you can get away with all the things you want to do when sober, but know better. It drove me nuts. So I stopped drinking until my early twenties, when I realized that once you’re out of high school and college, not everyone drinks to behave badly.
    3. I taught Anna Paquin how to swing dance. Yup. My cool celebrity story. She was quite drunk and quite pleased to tell me what a natural she was, irrelevant of my opinion!

hello lovely! I’ve heard Vancouver is very similar to Melbourne and am looking forward to visiting there (when it gets a little warmer!).

Love your random facts, so wonderful to learn a little more about you :)

    Three random facts about me…
    * I love to read – I get completely lost in a new world that opens up inside my head. Part awe at the author’s imagination, and part escapism from the serious thinking I have to do at work
    * Sometimes I still can’t believe I live in NYC – in Soho brushed shoulders with Keira Knightley and shopped with Adam Levine, all in the same weekend :)
    * I sometimes feel like two people – completely put together, structured and polished at work and then in my downtime, I can’t make a decision to save my life!

My first overseas trip was to Indonesia too. I was 15 and flew off on my own to visit my friend and her family. Your holidays in Queensland sounds absolutely wonderful and idyllic

I love this idea for a post and will remember to use it on my blog. I think it’s wonderful your uncle bought you a ticket! And I just love what you share about your childhood. Sounds wonderful!

Love this post! I would say you’ve had a pretty cool life so far. What a great Uncle, and a grandmother who lives on a yacht? Yes please! Hmmmmmm 3 random things about me?

    1. I am kind of a loner. As much as I love to spend time with my husband and close friends, I love the peace I feel when I am alone. I never feel lonely.
    2. I am obsessed with true life crime television. I think if I weren’t a dancer, I would have been a forensic pathologist!
    3. I love imperfection and healthy disfuntion is people. Makes them more interesting. ( :

Love this! It’s a fun little way to learn more about you :)

    My three things:

    1. I have never travelled outside of Australia. I would like to one day, but for now all extra money goes into renovating :)

    2. I am the eldest of six kids and twins run in my family (every generation). I’m not-so-secretly hoping I get the twins for my generation.

    3. I love doing weights way more than cardio. In fact, I despise cardio but realise that it’s necessary for health (and weight loss). I can lift heavier weights on the leg press machine than most boys I know and most boys at my PT studio!
