summer uniforms

In summer I really struggle on the sartorial front with trying to find the balance between looking classic/modern and feminine, feeling cool  and comfortable, and being sun smart. I can’t be a sun-worshipper with my skin type and light-sensitive eyes. Ideally, I’m a jeans and blazer kind of girl who loves mild weather. I’m also very comfortable in athletic clothes for long walks or running errands on foot, but one can’t live in them!

Each year I try to figure out the best outfits for me. Uniforms appeal to me – I like owning less clothes, the versatility that comes with a well-thought out wardrobe, easier shopping and finding what style resonates with my desires and practical pursuits.

This summer I’m testing two uniforms:

mid-thigh-length, low-waist-rise shorts (when I can find them, agh!)
+
a button up shirt with elbow length or long sleeves
+
converse-style sneakers
+
medium brim fashion hat or peak cap

Cool nights/air-conditioning: blazer / scarf / coloured pants

dress
+
flat sandals

medium brim hat

Cool nights/air-conditioning: denim jacket / cardigan / scarf

I like the idea of converse-style sneakers with a dress and hat, but how does one do it without looking like a teenager??! Do you have a seasonal uniform or struggle to find one too?

It’s a struggle for me, and I love your idea of uniforms.

As I began downsizing my wardrobe, I realise that I have kept pieces that is my style, which is comfort. Plain T-Shirts and jeans is also a standard uniform of mine. I just don’t like prints or patterned shirts that much. Dresses, however, is where I go loud. I may start making multiple dresses for summer in the same style but of different patterns. That will be my uniform for 2013 :D

Totally agreeing on the wardrobe uniform! Although I have also taken to maxi dresses with open button up white shirt and converse/vans style sneakers and mid-brim hat. Sounds like a bag lady, but I am one comfy bag lady :) xx

As the chilly wind is blowing outside its encouraging to hear you thinking of summer clothes! I love clothes and love to try something new each day … Perhaps I could simplify :) .

There is always the regular, go to items that i constantly wear – my uniform. But i don’t care, i would rather be comfortable in what i’m wearing. I’m a warm weather girl and I find winter much more difficult. My difficulty in summer is how much leg is too much for someone my age!

One of my other blogging friends has tried to survive with 33 items including jewellery. I shall certainly be looking to reduce my wardrobe next year.
Wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas. You are such an inspiration and it was been wonderful to meet you, and follow you this year.

They all sound like a great combo. Only if we have clear seasons here in San Franicsco.. then I would want to do a seasonal wardrobe too.

I love Converse-style sneakers with dresses too! Such a cute look! Have you ever worn Keds, Toms, or the ‘girly’ Vans sneakers before? They’re a bit more ‘feminine’ than normal Cons. I’ll send you an email with some links!
