daffy duck & minimalism
Daffy Duck and I go waaaay back. My mum and I worked out that I have owned this glass for approximately 18 years! He was well looked after in my teens – in fact I think he was rarely used for fear of breaking him. When I moved out of home at 18 to attend university, he went into hiding in a box. As I moved from place to place he came with me, wrapped in newspaper and safe from dishwashers and clumsy hands. Over the last five years or so I have decluttered dramatically. In that process I asked myself what was useful that could be kept and thought of differently. Sentimentality is still possible with minimalism. This guy is a great size for hearty smoothies. He now risks chipping or a fateful cracking or smashing, but that mischievous face tells me he’s up for it. And I will be ok if he does meet that fate through love and use rather than neglect. The hilarious spitting voice is too endearing to ignore. Instead of being in a box rarely thought of, he is now out and making me smile. After 18 years I still look at this glass and remember how he always made me giggle as a kid. As I drink my smoothie he evokes a little chuckle as an adult too.
