What a surreal feeling it was the first time we visited the place we knew only through movies, television and magazines. To see film crews in the street we were staying in. To walk to the famous Hollywood sights like we would walk to the local grocer – but to realise it is definitely a car dominated city and that we were an unusual sight. The word election on everyone’s lips. Prop 8 demonstration. Vanity Fair portraits exhibition. Watching the street CD sellers do their routine on each tourist. Australia’s own Kath & Kim show reproduced into an American version. Tasty Mexican food. Great shopping. Beautiful women in heels I can only dream of being able to balance on. Dogs on the back seat of a Bentley, wearing a hat sitting on the lap of a driver, walking into clothes stores and carried in bags – just like on TV.
